My opinion is a little biased, but I think that if broadcasters have to pay to play, the music market will take a huge hit, and sales will plummet. Songs that are played on the radio really have an impact on what is popular to the consumers today. To eliminate free play, it would be career suicide for many artists, and death to many new and upcoming artists. I know personally, that there are artists that I would never have heard of, if not for the radio. If that act goes through with the radio portion, things could get really bad for everyone in the music industry.

I like your writing, and this topic. It seems that this is just one avenue among a broader canvas which is the truthful needs for change in the music industry structure.

Thanks for the post, Brian. I assumed the AFM would support this. There's actually an editorial on their site about this too:

http://www.afm.org/news/afm-defends-performer-s-rights-on-the-hill

It's really going to be a showdown, and I am curious as to how it will all work out.

Take care,

Mike

Mike, are you aware of the AFM's involvement in this legislation? They are aggressively asking for members (like myself) to ask our reps to vote for this measure...
