Direct to fan is brilliant .I think its really useful for musicians to get these case studies and learn how they can apply the same strategies to get similar results.

I would also mention the TweepRoll Deluxe and TweetRoll – Followers Edition that I am developing right now, they both fill the space that Mashable was talking about completing your BlogRoll with people from twitter.

I also like the http://tinyurl.com/y8wqgap/ at the end, like you have it

Mike,

You could have added to your article the path followed by Philippe Saisse (he attended Berklee in the 80s).

He and drummer Simon Phillips (Toto) and bassist Pino Palladino (John Mayer, The Who) have formed a new ensemble Phillips . Saisse . Palladino a.ka.a PSP.

To introduce the band to their respective fans, Phillips, Saisse and Palladino are giving away free exclusive tracks through GetJuke, a new music platform. http://getjuke.com/psp

And for these tracks, they have enrolled some famous composers : after "Bela (Bartok)'s Boogie", "Allegreto", their rendition of Beethoven 7th Symphony 2nd Movement sounds like a hit-song.

Both tracks are available for free at http://getjuke.com/psp . Enjoy!

This was a really awesome piece, Mike. You nailed it and I've finally got something good to pass on to artists explaining "Direct to Fan" in terms that really mean something for DIY operations. Thanks for taking the time to do it right.

Thank so much for 'clearing the path' and providing much-needed direction. This is so helpful in terms of creating a cohesive and effective road map and marketing vision.

Appreciate it,
Indra

At Nimbit we recognize direct marketing as the future pathway for emerging artists. We are one of the "forward thinking, artist-serviced based companies" you elude to. Direct-to-Fan is not enough. Artist-to-Fan is a better description or more pointedly, Artist-to-Fan-Sales! 70,000 new impressions is fantastic! If any are turned into direct promotional downloads or sales, then the artist will now have a "true" new fan. One who supports them by buying something directly from them.
Nimbit is a direct-to-fan platform for artists to coordinate direct sales across the web and social networks. We offer the artist so many options to back up the type of viral marketing plans you've touched on, with the ability to give away tracks, change pricing on the fly, sell ANYTHING, bundle tickets with downloads, integrate download card programs and promotional code links, at the same time tracking fan activity and capturing sales data.

We've just introduced nimbitMyStore for Facebook so artists can sell directly to their fans within the social community that fosters natural viral growth. Coupling our direct sales platform with this type of viral marketing within Facebook can actually be profitable.
