I like your writing, and this topic. It seems that this is just one avenue among a broader canvas which is the truthful needs for change in the music industry structure.

Mike~
I so enjoy reading your blog~ I always
tell my music students who want to turn pro that the basics of marketing never change, only the pipeline that delivers the message changes with new technology. I read recently that one of the best ways to market a new business even in this day of new technologies is to pass out business cards everywhere, something I still do for my business. One of the greatest ideas for my own business was given to me 22 years ago by a producer who found my business card on the ad board at the music school I was attending at the time. He didn't find out about me by coming to one of my gigs, hearing me on the radio, or buying one of my recordings. He found out about me by my business card posted on an ad board.
The idea he gave me was where to locate my music studio here in West Texas, which 22 years later I'm still at the same location. It was one idea that changed everything for me. I always put every bit of extra cash back into marketing what I do, which is another mistake a lot of musicians make, thinking they can stop marketing once they become successful. It's a never ending process I have found. Thanks for all you do!

mking,

thanks that helps alot....I'm definately on the right track....I intially referenced AIFF in Dr.John Watkinson's "The Art of Digital Audio"(referenced in the MacRumorsBlog), which was given to me by a friend...I'm actually in an independant study program currently for sound engineering, these connections make all the difference for knowing that I'm on the right track...seems like I'm right on...thanks a bunch!

Hi Tiffany,

I'm converting all to Apple Lossless, but I think AIFF might actually be a better choice. Here's some detail on the discussion:

Thanks for the post, Brian. I assumed the AFM would support this. There's actually an editorial on their site about this too:

http://www.afm.org/news/afm-defends-performer-s-rights-on-the-hill

It's really going to be a showdown, and I am curious as to how it will all work out.

Take care,

Mike, are you aware of the AFM's involvement in this legislation? They are aggressively asking for members (like myself) to ask our reps to vote for this measure...

Hi Caroline,

Good question. I'm going to put them in storage, just in case I need a backup in the future. Although I think the value of CDs is declining rapidly, and it might make more sense to sell now than later...

Thanks for the post.

i've been a satisfied user of the squeezebox for over two years, though i mostly use it for listening to internet radio.

i'd love to see an iphone app that works like the squeezebox controller - seems like a natural
