Totally rejecting Andre's idea that Gail is "rambling" (apparently detailed, on-topic discussion is beyond his grasp), this was a very interesting read.

Good for Gail - who knew Frank better than anyone else in the world - and her efforts.

You're absolutely correct on the CD front. And there's actually a whole other way to license your music by focusing on the commercial and TV segment industry. And a large part of that industry doesn't even use music supervisors.

I used to "get" protecting the legacy of Frank, but other than ZPZ shows, the history of Frank is getting as old as the tape in that vault.

I dont live in her shoes, but if they dont take Gail out of the licensing decision making process, the memory will die...

Mike,

It's Wolfe- from Music Marketing (Winter 2011). Thanks so much for this feature. This is an excellent marketing plan case study.

I like the idea of the hidden press page, trading audio for emails, as well as the 'pay what you want' approach on the EP release.

Thanks for sharing!

Wolfe

Mike, Amazing feature. I am loving finding out all the ways TopSpin is helping artists make a living off music.

But Kevin - how realistic is that for most bands? How many bands can easily acquire $50K for recording costs? Probably not many, right? So it's not really a "repeatable" model, in that respect...right? Or am I missing something?

I like the idea CC Radio. Theoretically it would create alot of interest, but it would be alot of hardwork to do every month. It seems musicians are now spending more time promoting than making music.

On the otherhand if you build a following slowly, it is worth creating as mentioned above a “VIP” fan club, to add value to all of our direct-to-fan offerings. Even if you have 100 dedicated fans I think they will buy something, but to build up a following music needs to be given away for free.

Frank Zappa stood up for creative rights...never for a second backing down from what he believed in. He is an innovater and a trailblazer....totally and completely admirable. Gail is should be applauded for protecting all what they stood for and for carrying on the legacy. She's a true, independent, spirit..
